The Conifer girls’ basketball team is nearing the end of its season with a record of 9-4.
The team has been competing in a new division because they have moved from the 4A division from last season to the 3A division this season. The record this season shows immense growth, as the 2023-2024 season’s overall record was 4-19.
“ It was kinda sad having that record last year but we tried and played hard and that’s what counts,” sophomore Sydney Pierce said.
While in their current 2024-2025 season the team is staying strong with a winning record better than years prior.
“We really rely on each other a lot more this year than last year, or any other year I’ve played for this team, and it’s showing through our playing and through our impressive record that our record is a lot better than it’s been in a while,” Senior Lila Braun said.
The team took a close loss at their most recent game against the Littleton Lions, losing 34-37. The team has an upcoming game against the undefeated D’evelyn Tigers on Wednesday, January 29th.
“ I think it’s going to be a difficult game but I think we can pull through,” freshman Eden Sones said.
While D’evelyn is on a winning streak, Conifer’s strong defense has only allowed an average of about 27 points scored per game this season, which may help put an end to that streak.
“ We have strong defense so we can stop the ball easier and take it back, helping us keep them from shooting,” Sones said.
The team has been working strenuously at practice to master their plays and improve their shooting to prepare for a game situation. They are working hard at practice to prepare for in-game situations and to better prepare them as players.
“We run a lot of plays and just do a ton of shooting and ball control drills. We also have had a lot of repetition at practice to help,” Pierce said.
The team has many new incoming players, and the team is working hard at practices and building team connections and skills with the incoming freshmen and players new to basketball.
“We practice hard. It helps us build the skills we need to play, and helps us work so that when we get into games, we know what we are doing against the other team,” sophomore Harlen Gale said, who is new to the team this year.
The program is growing and now includes both Junior Varsity and Varsity teams.
“I think that we have a lot more confidence so far, and we are starting to learn how to play better together as a team, but we still know that we have a lot more to work on,” Braun said.
This growth in the girl’s basketball program has helped the girls work together as a team and grow closer on and off the court.
“A Lot of us have been playing for a long time and we had many talented new freshmen join which has benefited the team as we all grow together,” Pierce said.
Throughout the season, their teamwork has improved, and their deepening relationship strengthens their performance on the court.
“We work hard, and the team dynamic is there. We work really well together, and have good communication,” Sophomore Sophie Kramer said.
While the team has had a successful season so far, they have experienced the passing of their beloved coach Scott Deam. Scott has been a huge part of the team and the girl’s basketball program as a whole.
“We are dealing with a little bit of setbacks. With our coach passing, It has been hard, but I think winning these games for him is enough fuel to keep us going. We are really trying to keep the legacy that he kept at Conifer,” Kramer said.
