Juniors, Lily Hardwood, Sara Charvat, and Cece Johns, are working with Conifer High School administration to start a ski club. Their goal with the creation of this new club is to bring their passion from an outside hobby to a school environment.
“The reason we started this club is because we want to ski as much as possible this year, but school is in the way. So we decided if we made it a club, we could get excused from school as a club activity,” Charvat said.
Aside from the other clubs in the school, this club differs from the competitive aspect. The club is built around a more chill vibe for students who just want more ski days incorporated into their school and work schedules.
“It’ll be good for people to find friends who have the same passes and similar skiing styles,” Charvat said.
Besides some help from the admin to run the club through the school and occasional adult chaperones, the club will be run by students.
“I think it’s fun, and better this way because we know what students need and what the school/work schedule is like, and I think it lets us connect better with other students,” Charvat said.
The ski club plans to go up a few times every month to visit resorts on the Icon Pass and the Epic Pass. There are not any current plans for small mountain days, but the leadership of the club hopes that the members will be able to get together and plan those days with each other.
“We’re going to talk to some teachers and see who would want to chaperone and we can go up three or four times a month,” Harwood said.
Other students like Lily, Sara, and Cece with similar thoughts about skiing, are eager to be a part of the ski club and are showing lots of support for the idea.
“It’s been super easy. People have been coming up to me left and right asking if they can join so it’s been hype,” Charvat said.
The ski club so far has gained a lot of traction, and the participation level is only growing. Leadership is currently setting up plans for keeping the club around, even after they leave.
“I hope ski club is still here after we leave because I think it would be cool, I just hope it keeps getting bigger and we can keep getting more people and planning more extravagant adventures,” Charvat said.
