Conifer High School sports is about more than just winning and losing. It’s not all about the competition on the field, but also about the unity, pride, and enthusiasm of the school’s student section. A study by the Connecticut Association of Schools states that 95% of principals say school spirit is tied to high student and sports achievement.
“Having that student section and all my friends there for me helps me bring in the wins for my team,” sophomore Eli Arndt said. Arndt participates in baseball, basketball, and golf.
Conifer High School students and other community members often go to support the Lobos and be there for their school and peers. Many participate in supporting Conifer at football games, volleyball games, soccer games, and other events.
“It makes a difference, everyone who lives here supports Conifer. It is the atmosphere that makes football, football,” senior and Varsity receiver and corner Mason Murphy said.
Players and fans build a strong connection through their shared passion and support for the school and sport.
“They’re cheering me on, which makes me want to play good for them, and their support makes me want to support them,” Arndt said.
This relationship between fans and players improves the whole atmosphere by providing an energetic attitude that inspires passion and performance on and off the field.
“A football game or a volleyball is like nothing else, the crowd is so alive and makes you feel almost a part of the team,” Proctor said.
A sense of belonging is created when players get support from their peers and school. This encouragement can boost their confidence and motivation. It increases the enjoyment and meaning of the game by building unity. Ultimately, the support reinforces their dedication and commitment to the sport and devotion to the game.
“When you’ve worked towards this stuff and being able to make good plays, and you’re finally making it happen, and you can do it in front of everyone watching, it’s such an amazing feeling,” Murphy said.
Among students, teachers, and alumni alike, school spirit promotes a feeling of belonging and pride. During games, it builds teamwork, increases morale, and creates an encouraging atmosphere. This shared enthusiasm between fans and players can brighten the energy and atmosphere, leading to a more connected and vibrant school culture.
Sophomore Emily Bunchman played JV volleyball for Conifer and Varsity lacrosse last season. At Conifer High School, student attendance at games has increased, supporting Lobo teams.
“When people show up and they’re cheering for you, and you could just feel really supported by your peers; it really gets our energy up and builds our confidence,” Bunchman said.
