Bringing a passion for music that is hoped to inspire students, the new orchestra and choir director at Conifer High School is ready to push students to be their very best and in turn, elevate the music programs.
Laura Sarche has been a teacher in the music department for 26 years, and teaching band and orchestra at West Jefferson Middle School for 25 of those years. She now teaches concert strings, chamber orchestra, and choir at CHS.
“There is a lot of classroom management that has to happen as a middle school teacher,” Sarche said. “Here, I still have to prepare absolutely, but there is some maturity that happens at the high school, so I appreciate that piece, but I also appreciate the higher level musicianship and the types of things I can work on at this age versus middle school.”
While the middle school and the high school music environment are very different, Sarche’s favorite thing about teaching has remained constant throughout her teaching career.
“[My favorite part of teaching] is always the students. I love the students. The students are why I do what I do. It’s truly the students. The music that’s just icing on the cake, so I love the students,” Sarche said.
Sarche has many students in both choir and orchestra. She has been working with students of many different ages and pushes them all to be their best.
“I love Ms.Sarche, Ms.Sarche’s amazing and she’s a really good teacher and she is very encouraging and that’s like her best quality,” chamber orchestra student Sophia Kramer said.
Both of Sarche’s classes are preparing for their winter concerts and she puts her students into positions where they can grow and learn.
“In the short time I’ve spent with her, I have been very impressed on how she structures the classes and how she opens opportunities for us that we would not otherwise have access to,” choir student Macallan Barber said.
